NONPROFIT GROUPS TO HOLD COMMUNITY MEETING ON LGBTQ CULTURE IN CAPE HENLOPEN SCHOOLS

REHOBOTH BEACH, DELAWARE
For Immediate Release
June 12, 2017

In response to recent media and community discussion regarding the culture toward LGBTQ students in Cape Henlopen schools, CAMP Rehoboth, Equality Delaware and the ACLU of Delaware invite students, parents and concerned members of the public to a community meeting at CAMP Rehoboth at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, June 19, 2017, and issue the following joint statement:

As leaders in LGBTQ advocacy, education and community development in Rehoboth Beach and across the State of Delaware, it concerns us to hear of situations in which LGBTQ students may feel unsafe, unwelcome or unsupported at school.

Nationwide, we see public support and affirmation of LGBTQ students growing, and it is important to us and to our community that we ensure that we do everything possible to foster a culture at Cape Henlopen schools that reflects that support and affirmation. LGBTQ students are more likely than their peers to face harassment and discrimination at school. National surveys have shown that more than 75 percent of transgender students feel unsafe at school simply because of their gender identity.

We are inviting students, parents and concerned community members to join us for a community discussion on Monday, June 19, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. at CAMP Rehoboth's Community Room, located at 37 Baltimore Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, to discuss the culture toward LGBTQ students in Cape Henlopen schools. We particularly want to note for students that it is our hope that many of you will choose to attend, and that this is a safe space for you to express views and share thoughts and experiences.

We are committed to working to ensure that all students can enjoy a safe and affirming learning environment; have the support of educators, administrators, parents and peers; and are protected by nondiscrimination policies that promote dignity and respect for all members of the community.
