In a landmark victory, the U.S. Supreme Court today announced that all states must guarantee the freedom of same-sex couples to marry. This is a momentous win for freedom, equality, inclusion, and above all, love. We can celebrate that ours is a country that keeps its promise of the pursuit of happiness, liberty, and justice for all.

Couples get married because they want to be there for each other in sickness and in health, when times are good and when things get tough. Lewes resident and ACLU client David Michener’s fight to honor the memory of his late husband William and to be recognized on his death certificate is testament to that.

As Delawareans have long believed, it is wrong to deny same-sex couples the legal and economic protections that state and federal marriage laws provide for couples and their families. We celebrate today’s win for both David and the hundreds of thousands of same-sex couples living in the states that will now newly have the freedom to marry and legal recognition of their marriage as a result of this ruling.
