As one of the principal public interest nonprofits in the state, ACLU-DE receives requests for assistance from individuals on a daily basis. We respond to this demand through direct representation and by appearing as amicus curiae. As much as possible, our cases are handled by volunteer attorneys who work in cooperation with our legal department.

In addition to litigation, our volunteer attorneys help in several other important ways:

  • Analyzing proposed legislation that affects civil liberties;
  • Providing comments on policies or addressing complaints to administrative agencies and government officials; and
  • Speaking to groups about a particular topic, in which expertise has been developed, through our speakers bureau.

Finally, we ask that cooperating attorneys keep us informed about civil liberties issues they encounter in the course of their practices  or their personal lives.
