Voters have made it clear where we stand on vital issues affecting our civil liberties – now we need to vote our values in the Primary and General Elections.

Abortion access, Smart Justice, and renters’ rights are on our minds leading up to Delaware’s 2022 primary elections, and candidates are making it known where they stand – now, voters are, too.

This year, the issues that are most important to our communities are on the ballot – that’s why we launched our ACLU Voter Campaign. Delaware has an opportunity to advance policies that protect and expand our civil liberties, but in order to do that, we must elect candidates who align with our values.

We commissioned a poll of Democratic voters in New Castle County to get an idea of where voters stand on some of our key issues. The poll, conducted by Public Policy Polling, showed incredible support for some of the hottest issues on the ballot:

  • Medicaid funding for abortion: 74% of voters supported the General Assembly passing a law to allow state Medicaid dollars to fund abortion care, and 63% of voters said they would be more likely to vote for candidates who support this policy.
  • Probation reform: 74% of voters supported the General Assembly passing a law to ensure people on probation are not reincarcerated for minor technical violations.
  • Police reform: 64% of voters were more likely to vote for a candidate who supported making police disciplinary records public.
  • Voting rights: 73% of voters believe a person on probation should have their right to vote restored.
  • Housing justice: 69% of voters believe the General Assembly should pass legislation to guarantee a right to representation for renters facing eviction; and 50% of voters said they would be more likely to vote for a candidate who supported this policy.

Each of these reforms are broadly popular with voters, meaning candidates should take notice: Delaware voters are ready to vote their values in the 2022 Primary and General Elections.
