Nominations are due by Wednesday, May 17th.

Do you know someone who has taken their passion for civil rights and led a lifetime of achievements in Delaware? How about someone who has hit the ground running and is deserving of encouragement as they make their own Delaware mark? Maybe you’ve noticed someone with a deep commitment to justice who has managed to fly under the radar but is deserving of every honor. This year might be their time to shine!

The Kandler Awards have honored the indomitable spirit of former ACLU of Delaware, President Gerry Kandler, for over thirty years. This award is given to two individuals who, like Mr. Kandler, represent the highest commitment to ensuring the civil rights and liberties of all Delawareans.

Honorees can be active in any aspect of civil liberties including (but not limited to) securing our right to vote, ending mass incarceration, ensuring every child receives a quality and equitable education, addressing the needs of immigrants, protecting the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals, and/or any topic area where someone has continuously instilled the ACLU-DE value of justice and liberty for all. Honorees are invited to receive their award with their friends and ACLU supporters at the annual Kandler Memorial Awards Celebration on October 18th.

We’d like to give the opportunity for recognition to both established and up-and-coming leaders in the fight for civil liberties.

Nominations are open to the public and you may submit multiple nominations. Please nominate anyone who embodies the spirit of our work for a Kandler award this year. Submissions should include the candidate’s name, biography (including current location in DE), and a brief explanation of why the candidate should be considered (up to 250 words). All nominations should be submitted to Angela Harris, aharris@aclu-de.org, by Wednesday, May 17th.

We look forward to reading about all of the local change agents in your life and choosing two exemplary Delawareans to honor at this year's event!
