28TH ANNUAL KANDLER MEMORIAL AWARDS DINNER

We were proud to honor Jeff Goddess, Janet Leban, and Governor Markell for their tireless efforts to support justice and equality for all Delawareans.
 
On October 16, 2013, over 200 of our members, allies and friends gathered at the Chase Center on the Riverfront for the 28th annual Kandler Memorial Awards Dinner. Held each year in memory of former ACLU of Delaware President Gerry Kandler (1932-1985), the Kandler Dinner honors the important contrbutions of our awardees and celebrates our victories while raising the funds critical to fulfilling our mission. It was a pleasure to present this year’s Gerald E. Kandler Memorial Award to the Honorable Jack A. Markell, Governor of Delaware, and Janet Leban, retired executive director of the Delaware Center for Justice; the Clarence Darrow Cooperating Attorney Award was presented to longtime cooperating attorney Jeffrey Goddess, Esq. of Rosenthal, Monhait & Goddess, P.A.

It was an exciting night on many fronts. Old friends reunited over a lovely dinner, some friendly competition was seen between bidders at the silent auction tables, and we learned how our honorees’ contributions have expanded Delaware’s ever-evolving civil rights landscape. Governor Markell made an important speech announcing his commitment to reforming Delaware’s criminal justice system.

"The American dream cannot exist for all of us unless we commit to preserving and protecting rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution for everyone in this country,” he said.

We could not agree more.

Our greatest thanks to all who supported this year’s event. Your participation made it a truly memorable and financially successful evening, which in turn allows us to continue doing what you and all Delawareans count on us for— work to preserve and protect liberty and justice for ALL.
