Every Vote Counts Campaign Organizer

ACLU-DE seeks a dynamic and experienced organizer to support and expand the organizing capacity of its voting rights work.

This will include its ongoing Every Vote Counts campaign and the implementation of the Delaware John Lewis Voting Rights Act (DEVRA). The organizer will coordinate and maintain the ACLU-DE's overall volunteer engagement program and reports directly to the civic engagement counsel. The new organizer will focus on community outreach through public events and education, coalition building with existing and new partners, and managing a network of volunteers all in advancement of the core goals of the campaign.

Founded in 1961, The American Civil Liberties Union of Delaware (“ACLU-DE") is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that uses legal, legislative, and advocacy approaches to protect and promote a broad range of constitutional rights and freedoms, including justice reform, education equity, free speech, racial justice, reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, and more. ACLU-DE is an affiliate of the national ACLU, the leading defender of civil liberties guaranteed by our nation’s Bill of Rights.

ACLU-DE is one of this area’s premier public advocacy organizations. Based in Wilmington, Delaware, ACLU-DE is led by an 16-member Board of Directors and a staff of seventeen. The Wilmington and broader Delaware communities are vibrant and collegial, and Delaware offers an excellent and affordable quality of life. Wilmington is also close to various attractions, including major cities such as New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC and the beach.

Responsibilities

Likely responsibilities of the new organizer will include:

  • building a thorough understanding of the goals and tactics of the Every Vote Counts campaign and effectively communicating this information to partners and the public,
  • organizing engagements with the public across the state to educate and mobilize new advocates,
  • communicating key voting rights and campaign developments with volunteers and the public,
  • managing ACLU-DE's volunteer engagement program,
  • facilitating advocacy trainings for volunteers to build up their skills in service of the campaign,
  • elevating dedicated volunteers into leading roles and supervising the work of these volunteers,
  • participating in and helping to facilitate advocacy on voting rights priorities with elected officials,
  • managing and building out relationships with new and existing coalition partners,
  • developing key performance metrics for evaluating the success of individual tactics and the campaign’s overall effectiveness,
  • educating the public on any changes to voting laws or practices following implementation of DEVRA and other voting rights priority legislation or litigation, and
  • connecting individuals or groups representing communities subject to discrimination in voting to ACLU-DE legal for investigation of DEVRA claims.

Responsibilities are subject to change based on voting rights priority legislation progress and the broader needs of the organization.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will have the following skills, experience, and qualities:

  • a form of reliable transportation and willingness to travel across the state,
  • ability to work in a fast-paced environment,
  • willingness to work a flexible schedule, including occasional weekends and some late evenings,
  • personally committed to advancing ACLU-DE values, mission, goals and programs, with an understanding of the range of civil liberties issues and their implications.
  • strong interpersonal, emotional intelligence, and public speaking skills
  • community organizing experience,
  • volunteer and coalition management experience,
  • lobbying experience,
  • previous experience of advocacy in any capacity in Delaware
  • possesses competencies and commitment needed to create and support an equitable and high-performing work environment,
  • ability to influence others and understand the dynamics of personal and political influence, and
  • able to earn trust and respect from the communities ACLU-DE serves.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary range is $55,000-$70,000. Excellent benefits include paid vacation, medical and dental insurance, retirement savings plan, life and long-term disability insurance, and generous paid holidays.
