Last-Minute Attempts to Deny Mail-In Voting Threatens Democracy, Says ACLU
WILMINGTON: The American Civil Liberties Union of Delaware released the following statement in response to a lawsuit filed by the Delaware Republican Party to challenge Delawareans’ access to vote by mail. The statement is attributable to Mike Brickner, executive director of the ACLU of Delaware:
“Voters must not be forced to choose between their health and their right to vote. This last minute attempt to deny hundreds of thousands of Delawareans the option to vote by mail is a thinly veiled ploy to confuse and disenfranchise voters. We will not stand for it.
Vote by mail is secure and safe. Both Republican and Democratic legislators in Delaware came together earlier this year to pass legislation to ensure every voter could cast a ballot by mail. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, 34 states and the District of Columbia allowed voters to cast ballots by mail without an excuse and have done so effectively and securely.
With important primary elections only weeks away, voters deserve to have clarity that they can cast their ballot however they choose. This lawsuit will only sow confusion and distrust into our election system. Delaware voters deserve better."
