DVRC Issues Statement on Supreme Court Ruling in Favor of Permanent Absentee Voters

The following statement can be attributed to member organizations of the Delaware Voting Rights Coalition (DVRC):

There are several valid reasons why an eligible voter may be unable to go to their polling place in-person on Election Day: disability or illness, caregiver responsibilities, active duty deployment, or similar circumstances. Permanent absentee voting laws ensure that all of our eligible community members have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote.

We are pleased that the Delaware Supreme Court has recognized the constitutional validity of permanent absentee voting and upheld our state law allowing greater access to the ballot for eligible voters.

As we have witnessed in our most recent Primary Election, Delawareans from all three counties rely on absentee voting to stay civically engaged. Voting is the cornerstone of our democracy, and Delaware must continue to stand strong in support of our democratic ideals.

DVRC will always act in the interest of Delaware voters, and we are grateful that we can assure permanent absentee voters that they will receive their ballots as expected for the upcoming Midterm Elections. No additional action is required for those currently on the permanent absentee list.
