SISTER HELEN PREJEAN, PROMINENT DEATH PENALTY REPEAL ACTIVIST, VISITS DELAWARE

Sister Helen explained that Delaware's death penalty is among the worst in the nation. Delaware ranks third per capita for executions, has the highest minority population on death row in the country, and lays claim to one of the broadest statutes nationwide.

Sister Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking and prominent death penalty repeal activist, came to Delaware for a series of events on October 9th. She joined together with political, religious and nonprofit leaders to share an important message: with such overwhelming support, Senate Bill 19 deserves a vote.

Sister Helen shared her inspiring story and national perspective with a group of over 200 supporters at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Bear, urging them to closely examine the role of the death penalty.

For me, the heart of this issue is how capital punishment hurts everyone involved— from families of both the victims and the executed to the corrections officers who have to kill in our names. We can do better,” Sister Helen said.

To join the growing coalition of Delawareans that support repeal, visit derepeal.org to write your legislators, urging them to support Senate Bill 19.
