At 10am on January 1, 2012, Delaware's law adopting same-sex civil unions took effect. Later that afternoon, former ACLU-DE executive director, Drewry Fennell and her partner, Lisa B. Goodman, president of Equality Delaware, became the first couple in Delaware to be joined in a same-sex, civil-union ceremony.

On May 11, 2011, Governor Jack Markell signed Senate Bill 30 into law, granting gay and lesbian couples the same legal rights and protections that heterosexual married couples have under state law by entering into a civil union.

Other area same-sex couples have been united since the law went into effect on January 1st. Their stories are highlighted in the Wilmington News Journal links below.
