ACLU-DE Launches Voter Information Website Ahead of School Board Elections

WILMINGTON—The ACLU of Delaware (ACLU-DE), in partnership with S.A.F.E Schools Delaware, has launched a new voter information website, VoteDelaware.org.

This website, developed and designed by Delaware-based, woman-owned creative agency, BrandSwan, aims to be an accessible one-stop shop for Delaware voters to learn where, when, and how to vote in the 2022 elections, and where candidates stand on key issues.

As ACLU-DE continues to champion the fight to protect and expand Delawareans’ freedom to vote through policy change and advocacy efforts led largely by the Delaware Voting Rights Coalition (DVRC), VoteDelaware.org tackles a different side of the effort to increase participation: voter education.

VoteDelaware.org was created to address information barriers that can confuse and intimidate voters. Website visitors can easily find information regarding voter registration, dates and deadlines, alternative methods of voting, voter assistance, and questionnaires that highlight candidate stances on relevant issues.

Meera Devotta, ACLU-DE voter campaign manager, said “Civil liberties are on the ballot in every election. Delaware voters deserve access to the information they need to cast their ballots confidently, and this website aims to make sure that information is easy to find, all in one place.”

Currently, VoteDelaware.org is informing voters about the upcoming Delaware School Board elections on May 10, 2022. By clicking on the “School Board Elections” page, voters will not only find information about how and where to vote in May, but will also be able to read through questions and answers for candidate questionnaires submitted by the S.A.F.E. Schools campaign.

“We’ve learned from situations like the COVID-19 pandemic that how schools react to emergencies is critical to our children and community’s safety. This is just one example of the importance of participating in school board elections,” said Shannin Giffin, ACLU-DE senior policy advocate and co-chair of S.A.F.E. Schools. “Informed voters making informed decisions for school board elections is just as important as voters making informed decisions for any other election.”

Additionally, VoteDelaware.org will serve as a central hub of information regarding voting and election-related events and programming. This will include events like candidate forums, panel discussions, registration drives, and other channels for engagement.

As the primary and general elections approach this fall, voters will also be able to access candidate questionnaires for those elections. These questionnaires will focus on key issues, including: education equity, immigrants’ rights, reproductive freedom, Smart Justice, and voting rights.

The launch of VoteDelaware.org is the beginning of a new ACLU-DE Voter Campaign that will continue to develop and implement strategies to mobilize Delawareans across the state to protect and expand voting rights and make their voices heard with their votes.
