Voting Rights Act 50th Anniversary Celebration

August 6, 2015 @ 10:00 am
August 7, 2015 @ 9:45 am

Please join the Delaware Alliance for Community Advancement, Delaware Sierra Club and their allies for a press conference to celebrate the 50th anniversary of what the U.S. Justice Department has called the most effective civil rights law ever passed in this country.

This event will celebrate the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and reflect on all the hard work that went into securing this landmark piece of legislation. We will also look forward at the work ahead to make our political system truly equitable and accessible to all Delawareans regardless of race, age, socioeconomic status or other factors. We'll hear from past, present and future Civil Rights leaders here in Delaware.  You can RSVP on facebook if you're on.

One such opportunity to expand voting rights here in Delaware to expand is to implement same day voter registration (SDR) in Delaware. States with SDR constantly rank among the top states for voter turnout and voter participation among people of color and young people. Delaware ranks below the national average at registering African Americans, Latinos, and young people.
